John Batcheller was baptized at the First Chuch in Salem, Massachusetts on January 20, 1638 ( Pierce ), and he lived in the Salem or Wenham area his entire life. On July 12, 1661, he married his first wife, Mary Dennis ( Pierce ), who died four short years later on June 26th of 1665 ( Pierce ). John, however, would marry again in 1666. Sarah Goodale, daughter of Robert Goodale of Salem, Massachusetts, would be his second wife. They were married on May 4, 1666 ( Pierce ).

In 1692, John Batcheller and the other residents of the Salem area were swept up in the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials. John, himself, served as a juror at the trials, and years after the trials signed a statement of forgiveness for the actions of those involved ( Pierce ). The trails began when, in January of 1692, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village became ill. The local doctor, William Griggs, diagnosed the girls as being "bewitched" ( Salem ). Similar illnesses were diagnosed in the area, and in June of that year, a Court of Oyer and Terminer was formed to put to trail suspected witches ( Salem ). By the time the trials were over, nearly twenty people had been executed, many died in prison, and several who were accused were pardoned when the Court was disbanded.

John Batcheller died on November 17, 1698 ( Pierce ).
