The Dragonfly was designed to fill a perceived need for a low-budget infantry suppression gunship. It is based on a civilian cargo hauler. The engine was tweaked to meet military specifications, armor plate added to protect its hull, and most importantly, armament was added. In the bulbous pods on its nose and sides, the Dragonfly carries no less than twenty-two 13mm SperryBrowning machine guns.
These are, of course, most effective against unarmored infantry, but the sheer volume of lead they are capable of pumping out makes the Dragonfly surprisingly effective even against heavy mechs. Not only do they chew up armor, but the spray of bullets, like the scatter of munitions from a Cluster shell, has a tendency to find seams in armor and small, unprotected components. The drawback is the short range of the guns.
During the Confederate assault on The Edge, two Dragonflies, along with two lances of Firefox and Banshee gunships, ambushed and destroyed Sho-sho Kuhlmeier's regimental headquarters lance. The Dragonflies were credited with the destruction of Kuhlmeier's BattleMaster and her aide's Atlas, as well as a pair of Long Tom mobile artillery pieces.
