Overview:

The Fox was created by the Dark Knight Legion, and promises to become the new Confederation's standard 20-ton mech. It is built on the same frame as the common Stinger and Wasp. In fact, until recently, there were no factories building the Fox; Foxes were produced by rebuilding a Stinger or Wasp chassis. However, since the entry of Canopus into the Confederation, the Stinger and Wasp lines at the Majesty factory on Canopus IV have been refitted to produce Foxes, as well as STG-4C Stingers and WSP-2C Wasps. It is unclear at this point whether other Wasp and Stinger lines will be similarly refitted.

As is typical for Dark Knight Legion-designed machines, the Fox is slower than the Stinger or Wasp, but makes up for it in firepower and armor. The Fox's speed and jump capability is in the range more typical for medium mechs. Though this means that it is not as well suited for the scouting role as most light mechs, its other properties make it an ideal hunter-killer mech for dealing with the enemy's scouts.

Instead of the assortment of light, short range weapons typically carried by light mechs, the Fox carries a single Magna Mark III heavy laser. This gives it the ability to engage other light mechs at ranges where they are unable to return fire, and the concentrated firepower to inflict crippling damage on them with a single shot. If other light mechs do make it into weapons range, the Fox carries as much armor as could be expected on a mech of its size.

Variants:

The Fox model that has gone into production at the Majesty plant is actually the FOX-2A variant, which incorporates recovered technology to increase its performance. It uses an XL engine, Endo Steel structure, and double-strength heat sinks to recover sufficient weight capacity to replace the Mark III laser with a Magna Firestar extended-range particle cannon and to slightly increase the jump range.

A few Foxes have been upgraded in the field to use Star League technology as well. These FOX-1E Foxes don't have the upgraded engines and internal structure or the improved jump-capability of the 2A Foxes. They do use the double heat sinks, however. Instead of the Magna, the 1E carries a Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser.

Also, a single example of an LAM version of the Fox, the FOX-1B Flying Fox, is known to exist. Its origins are unclear, for it is apparently not based on the Stinger or Wasp LAM, being five tons lighter than either. Other than the LAM conversion system, it is identical to the standard Fox.
