Born in Canterbury, England, in the county of Kent, in 1604 ( Reid ), Joseph Batcheller emigrated to America in 1636. He settled first in Salem, Massachusetts, and later in the town of Wenham, Massachusetts ( Pierce ). Along with Joseph came his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married in 1628 ( Reid ), his brothers Henry and John, one child, and three servants. He was made a freeman in 1637 ( Pierce ).

Joseph was deputy to the General Court in Boston in the year of 1644, and was the first such repersentative from the town of Wenham. It was also in this year, on October 8th, that the church at Wenham was organized. Joseph Batcheller was listed as one of the members. His wife was admitted to membership on November 11th of that year ( Pierce ).

In a list titled "A true roll or list of names, surnames, and qualities of all such persons who have taken passage from the town and port of Sandwich for the American plantations, since the last certificate of such passengers returned into the office of Dover castle", Joseph, and his brother John, are both listed with the occupation of taylor ( Pierce ).

Joseph Batcheller died in March of 1647, leaving behind his wife, Elizabeth, and his children Mark, John, Elizabeth, and Hannah ( Pierce ).
